SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

The projects of the company,  well connected to external infrastructure, provide an opportunity to improve the quality of life and livelihoods of  people in the local communities around them. Direct objectives of the Company’s social initiatives include:

Employment Generation, Infrastructure and Accessibility:
  • With activities ongoing on the ground, we have been a source of new employment for the local population.
  • Approximately 120 people have direct and regular employment and another 50-100 people are indirectly employed through the project. These activities have not only provided regular and quality livelihoods to the local commune, but has also led to the development of various skills and provided professional.
  • With the creation of a fabrication and engineering center at the project sites, the opportunity for gaining skills in the sector empower the local populace to develop new skills.
  • Over 95% of the employees in Madagascar are local people (including daily wage and payroll employees).

Directly employing >150 people

  • The company has built internal roads which have connected interior and remote villages to developed areas giving better access to schools, markets and improving the lifestyle of the local population, improving  quality of life and creating multiple direct and indirect employment opportunities.
  • Overburden extracted from mining is used for landfilling as fertile topsoil in barren and non-mineralized areas to  promote horticulture and farming in the region, and is will further be provided to local communities s for housebuilding. The company is developing an area for providing land for housing to its workers.
  • The company also provides drinking water arrangements to nearby settlements.
 
Education and Sports:
  • A new school building was constructed by the company, and it connectivity to the school was improved with the development of the approach road.
  • Vatomina School located on a small hillock did not have an approach road at all. The company constructed a new all-weather road leading up to the school.
  • The company organizes games on Madagascan independence day each year, and organizes regular sports events in the local school to promote local sports and wellbeing  among students and wider community.
  • Stationary and other study materials have been provided to students.
  • Regular distribution of healthy food in schools to support the dietary health of children.

Health & Safety

  • A well-stocked Health Centre has been built at Sahamamy, manned by a qualified medical practitioner.
  • The centre is open 24*7 and arranges for any transfer to hospitals necessary.
  • All facilities provided to local communities free of cost.
  • The company as a policy, ensures that health and safety measures are complied with at all its operations, with the use of PPE compulsory, and provides necessary clothing, shoes, helmets and other safety equipment for workers.

Land Rights Certification
  • At the Vatomina project, the Company commissioned a survey by a government-authorised surveyor and formed a committee constituting members from the local community, company representatives and the mayor.
  • A uniform methodology for land settlement was structured and implemented. 
 
Engaging with Locals – Participation in local festivals and events
  • The Company participates in national festivals/ celebrations in Madagascar, such as the local Independence Day parade and celebrations, Christmas and Diwali etc.
